Pakistan shares much of the ancient history of India. Aryan
invaders captured the region around 1500 BC forging a hindu
civilization that dominated for 2,000 years. In 712 AD, Arab
invasions brought Islam and under the Mogul Empire, from 1526 to
1857, Moslems ruled most of India. After World War I, the
Moslems of British India demanded independent rights. Mohammad
Ali Jinnah became the principle leaders of the Pakistan
movement, a leader of the Moslem League from 1916 and from 1940
advocated a Moslem Pakistani state. On August 14, 1947, the
Moslem self-ruling portions of India became Pakistan. Pakistan
was divided into two areas, East and West, separated by 1000
miles on the other side of India. In 1956, Pakistan became a
republic and in October 1958 General Mohammad Ayub Khan took
power in a coup. He was elected President in 1960 and again in
1965. Pakistan is a member of the Central Treaty Organization,
aligned with the West and after clashes between Indian and China
in 1962, made agreements for commercial treaties with China.
Ayub resigned in March, 1969 and the government was turned over
to General Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan and martial law was declared.
On March 25, 1971 government troops launched attacks in the east
and with the help of India, the independent country of Bangladesh
was declared. Over 10 million fled into India. By December 3,
1971 full scale war had broken out between India and Pakistan,
lasting until December 17. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in December, 1970
became President. In July 1977 he was overthrown in a military
coup and executed. Pakistan has been very supportive of the
Afghan war against the Soviets. There are now over 2 million
Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
